Happy International Tiger Day!

WWF-Türkiye (World Wide Fund for Nature Türkiye) and Eczacıbaşı Sports Club are continuing their collaboration for International Tiger Day on July 29 this year. Launched under the theme “Tigers on the Court and in the Wild,” the initiative aims to raise awareness for tiger conservation by drawing attention to the shared characteristics of the Tigers on the volleyball court and tigers in their natural habitat.

The tiger, the symbol of Eczacıbaşı Sports Club, represents strength, agility, determination, and a team culture passed down through generations. Tigers in the wild, on the other hand, are among the world's most remarkable species, renowned for their powerful reflexes, keen senses, and enduring family bonds that span generations.

Shared Traits On and Off the Court

The Tigers on the court react to the ball within fractions of a second and can change the course of a match with their defensive plays. Tigers in the wild can see up to six times better than humans in the dark and are able to focus all their attention on a single decisive move.

Their shared characteristics go beyond speed, focus, and powerful reflexes. For many years, Eczacıbaşı Sports Club has contributed to Turkish volleyball through its strong youth development system, helping nurture new generations of athletes. Similarly, mother tigers carefully protect and prepare their cubs for life, playing a vital role in ensuring the survival of their species. The transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next on the volleyball court mirrors the enduring bonds that sustain generations in the wild.

Although tigers are among the world's most iconic species and have held an important place in the cultural heritage of many societies throughout history, they continue to face serious threats due to habitat fragmentation, habitat loss, poaching, illegal wildlife trade, and human-wildlife conflict.

Protecting tigers means safeguarding far more than a single species. Conserving the forests they inhabit also helps protect water resources relied upon by millions of people, while preserving habitats shared with many other threatened species, including rhinoceroses, elephants, brown bears, and orangutans. Tigers are an essential part of our planet's complex ecosystems, and the loss of their habitats directly affects the delicate natural balance that sustains life on Earth. The WWF Global Network works across borders to protect tiger habitats through international cooperation.
